When it comes to their hair, Black women face a difficult choice | CNN

A new study linking hair-straightening products to an increased risk for uterine cancer presents a dilemma for Black women, who can face racial discrimination in the workplace for wearing natural hairstyles. In the early 2000s, she worked as a cosmetologist and frequently used the products to straighten her hair and other women’s as well. Back then, she says, cosmetology schools rarely offered lessons in how to take care of Black women’s natural hair – those interested in learning had to teach themselves.Nearly two decades later, Eady says she worries about the health consequences of that hair-straightening period in her life. Her anxiety spiked this week when she read about the new study and how Black women may be more affected due to their higher use of relaxers and other hair-straightening products. The association between hair-straightening products and uterine cancer cases was most pronounced for Black women, who made up 7.4% of the study participants but almost 60% of those who reported ever using straighteners. The risk was more than six times higher for Black women. Experts say several factors lead women to use hair-straightening products, including Eurocentric standards of beauty and a desire for versatility in changing hairstyles and self-expression.

New Orleans' women and Black hair stylists discuss the shift from 'damaging' relaxers

I think we just preach it so much in the Black community,” said Harvey.“As I learned color,” said Janasia Smith. “I realized that it's easier to color natural hair because there's no chemicals, no nothing.” · Smith believes the easy accessibility of harmful chemicals has always been a danger to Black women who for years treated their own hair at home.

Is Black Hair a Recessive or Dominant Trait? - Biology Insights

Explore the fascinating genetics of human hair color. Understand how specific traits, like black hair, are inherited and the nuances of genetic expression. Pheomelanin, on the other hand, is a lighter pigment responsible for red and yellow tones. The specific combination and total amount of these two melanins, controlled by various genes, dictate the final hair color an individual possesses. Black hair is a dominant trait in human genetics. This means an individual needs only one copy of the allele responsible for black hair from either parent for this hair color to be expressed. The genes involved promote a high production of eumelanin, the dark pigment. For example, if one parent contributes a gene for abundant eumelanin and the other for less eumelanin or more pheomelanin, the child is still likely to have black or very dark brown hair. This is because the genetic instructions for high eumelanin production are strong enough to be expressed over those for lighter shades. While MC1R is often associated with red hair, other genes interact to control the overall melanin balance. Alleles leading to the darkest hair colors prompt melanocytes to produce and deposit large quantities of eumelanin into the hair shaft, resulting in black pigmentation.

Black hair - Wikipedia

Black hair is the darkest and most common of all human hair colors globally, due to large populations with this trait. This hair type contains a much more dense quantity of eumelanin pigmentation in comparison to other hair colors, such as brown, blonde and red. In English, various types of black hair are sometimes described as soft-black, raven black, or jet-black. The range of skin colors associated with black hair is vast, ranging from the palest of light skin tones to dark skin.Black hair is the most common in Asia and Africa. Though this characteristic can also be seen throughout Europe as well, it is considerably less common. It can be found in Celtic populations especially those from western parts of Ireland who were often referred to as "Black Irish" particularly in the United States.Naturally, hair reflects light, which is why even black hair does not appear fully dark in the light. However, the darkest shade of black hair, raven-black, does not behave as other hair would in the light. The name of the color comes from a raven’s wing due to similarities in behavior.Appearing as being almost blue in some conditions, this hair color is mostly found with people from Africa, South and Southeast Asia, East Asia, Central Asia and Latin America. True black hair is similar to a black cat's fur.

An animation breakthrough makes it possible to more accurately illustrate Black hair : NPR

NPR's Ayesha Rascoe speaks with video game designer and UC Santa Cruz professor A.M. Darke, about her work on a new computer algorithm that more accurately illustrates Black hair. Whether it's video games or animated movies and TV, you may have noticed that Black characters have matching hairstyles time and time again - often flat, two-dimensional and straight up unrealistic hairstyles. And this isn't a coincidence.A.M. Darke, an artist, game maker and professor in UC Santa Cruz's Department of Performance, Play and Design, co-authored algorithms last month that animate three major characteristics of Black hair. Professor Darke joins us now to talk about her research.DARKE: So I'll start by saying that whenever you're tackling a research problem, you get to define, you know, what features matter and are important. So with straight hair, there have been certain features that say, oh, OK, if we hit this look, then we've got it, right? We've succeeded. For Black hair, that hadn't happened. But as we know, curly hair very rarely just falls in line, and so you'll have hairs that break out of the pattern, and so they skip the period. That is what gives the appearance of, like, frizzy or undefined hair. RASCOE: And is it that Black hair is more difficult to animate, or is it that the research has lagged because the idea was to just start from a European framework?
