Is black hair really black or is it actually a super dark brown?

Main Post:

I’ve always thought people could have black hair and that it was the most common hair color in humans. However I read somewhere that in reality it’s just a really dark brown. Is this the case? Also, if it really is black, can jet black hair be a natural color without dyes?

Top Comment: Humans really only have two pigments. One is yellow/red/brown and one is brown/black. Beyond these two colors and how pigmented the hair is, everything else is an optical effect because of the physical makeup (texture) of the hair and how it reflects light making it look different kinds of black or brown. When you shine light through very black hair under magnification, it is clearly brown unless it has been dyed. Black hair dyes are usually blue or green.

Is there a Black hair reddit that is dedicated to showing off hair styles and other aspirational content?

Main Post:

I feel like I have outgrown the natural hair and black hair reddit pages. No disrespect but I just can’t stomach the hairball pics or the texture Identification posts. I would love if we had a reddit dedicated to showing off styles or even haircare routines. Seems like everyone posting these days is obsessed with going bald😩.

I find it so hard to not feel like black hair is "bad hair" I know it's not but it's so hard to do anything with it

Main Post:

I have 4b hair and I almost never wear it out naturally. I always relax it if I leave it out for a time. I know it's not bad and we just try to style it into ways it's not supposed to be styled but the only hairstyle you can really do is two buns, one bun or an afro that would have rocked in the 80s 🤣 but not so much in 2024. I think it's a Jamaican thing. Most Jamaican women relax their hair to death and I'm no exception. Could you guys give me any inspo on some people with 4b hair that like to wear their hair naturally.

Top Comment: I don’t know any people but being on Pinterest and seeing various people with similar hair has really helped me. Just curate your search to black women or a certain hair type. Same as YouTube!

Good Black Hair Care Products?

Main Post:

Hey y’all! I’m struggling a bit to find some good, affordable products for my own hair so I thought it wouldn’t hurt to ask here.

I have around 4b, high porosity hair and my main issue is the fact that it dries out quick which leads to breakage. I’ve been sticking to the Mielle brand because that’s just what I’m used to.

I would appreciate any and all recommendations if you have them for shampoos, conditioners, and leave-in products that are long lasting.

Thank you!!!

Unpopular Black Hair Opinion. Thoughts?

Main Post: Unpopular Black Hair Opinion. Thoughts?

Top Comment: I do think there is a stigma with black women wearing wigs/weaves but I think its so much more complex than just self-hate. We know that we are accepted and embraced more seemingly when we dont wear our natural hair especially in professional settings. Theres lots of women who would rather keep their hair in a silk press 24/7 as well. I think what we have to also consider is that some women are more invested in cosmetics than others. Personally, I love changing my hair because its a hobby of mine. I do wish we wore our hair out more though. I do every now and then

Is Natural Hair Really Too Much Work?

Main Post:

I see so many black women saying having natural hair is too much work and while I can see where they’re coming from, I don’t fully agree.

A lot of popular styles for natural hair is a lot of work. But keeping it clean and healthy isn’t. Wash it biweekly. Deep condition once a month. Maybe a hair mask or hot oil treatment here and there. Trim the ends 4 times a year.

But when I think of my hair being difficult, I think of having to slick it down with gels and edge controls. Or any style that changes the texture of my hair. Because doing a messy puff or just detangling it and letting it rock isn’t considered “done”.

But that might just be me. What do you guys think? Is natural really just so hard to handle or do we just not have the luxury to be lazy with our hair the way other races of women do?

Top Comment: I feel like two things that often aren’t brought up in these discussions are: sensory issues and activity levels. My natural hair is a little more involved than my hair when it’s straight or in braids but not difficult. But I really struggle with the sensation of wet hair. I loathe the feeling and it takes 2-3 business days for my hair to air dry (and air drying is how it looks best and I try to avoid heat in general if I’m wearing my hair natural). Sensory issues like that can be a big barrier for neurodivergent naturals like myself. I also exercise and sweat a lot and will always prioritize that over wearing my hair any type of way because my mental health is dependent on it. Sweat and natural hair is tough! Star Puppy had a great video about this a few weeks ago that I highly suggest everyone check out! So no, natural hair is not difficult but I can understand how it could be difficult to deal with if you have other priorities or deal with sensory issues.

a subreddit to talk about black hair

Main Post:

i've been asking a question on r/blackhair for the past week and haven't got a single response so i'm looking for an alternative

Top Comment:

r/BlackHairCare and r/blackhairstyles are the best I can find (SO MUCH PORN on anything black/afro+hair).

The first sub is low traffic. The second one is low and closed for submissions, but the sole mod is long gone, so you could request it at r/redditrequest and reopen it if you like.
